Detailed 7-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Elevation: 1,830m to 3,050m Distance: 11 km Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

After breakfast in Moshi/Arusha, drive to Machame Gate for registration. Begin your trek through the lush, dense cloud forest. Keep an eye out for Black-and-White Colobus monkeys along the trail until reaching Machame Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Elevation: 3,050m to 3,850m Distance: 5 km Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Ascend out of the rainforest into the moorland zone. Cross a steep rocky ridge onto the Shira Plateau. Enjoy expansive views of Mount Meru and the western breaches of Kilimanjaro as you head into Shira 2 Camp.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3,850m to 4,630m (Lava Tower) to 3,960m Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

A crucial day for acclimatization (“climb high, sleep low”). Trek up to the volcanic formation of Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend into the Great Barranco Valley, framed by the majestic Barranco Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3,960m to 3,995m Distance: 5 km Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Conquer the famous Barranco Wall using a fun, non-technical scramble. Continue across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, perfect for an extra day of acclimatization prior to the summit push.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Base Camp
Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m Distance: 4 km Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Trek through alpine desert terrain to reach Barafu Camp. Complete early dinner and equipment preparation before turning in early to rest before the midnight summit ascent.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m to 3,100m Distance: 15 km Hiking Time: 11–14 hours

Around midnight, begin the final summit push over scree to Stella Point (5,756m) for sunrise. Continue 1 hour further to Uhuru Peak—the roof of Africa! After photos, descend back to Barafu for lunch, then down to Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi/Arusha
Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your official summit certificates and celebrate with your mountain crew before private transfer back to your hotel.
