In Swahili, safari simply means “journey.” Today it means driving through Tanzania’s bush and national parks in search of wildlife — a game drive at dawn, sundowners overlooking the plains, the sound of lions at night from your tent. Experience the Great Migration like never before! Here’s a quick guide to what to expect throughout the year:
- Dec – Mar: Southern Serengeti/Ndutu plains. Witness the calving season with thousands of newborn wildebeest and thrilling predator action.
- Apr – May: Central & Western Serengeti. As herds move north, enjoy the lush green scenery with fewer crowds and lower rates.
- Jun – Jul: Western Corridor. The Grumeti River crossings begin, marking the start of the dry season.
- Aug – Oct: Northern Serengeti/Mara River. Experience dramatic Mara River crossings and peak dry-season game viewing.
- Nov: Eastern & Central Serengeti. Short rains push the herds back south toward Ndutu.
Finish your safari on Zanzibar
White sand, turquoise water, Stone Town’s spice markets and dhow sunset cruises — Zanzibar is the classic, and most popular, way to end a Tanzania safari. A short 1.5-hour flight from the northern circuit connects dust and game drives to beach and ocean in one trip. We also arrange Pemba and Mafia Island for a quieter, more remote finish.
Meet the people behind the landscape
Tanzania is home to more than 120 ethnic groups. Visit a Maasai boma in the Ngorongoro Highlands, learn coffee farming with a Chagga family on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, hike to Materuni waterfalls, or trek Mount Kilimanjaro itself. Cultural tours and trekking add depth to any safari and can be combined with wildlife days on the same itinerary.
